• SPONSORS - Southam are well supported by many local businesses who have sponsored us by advertising, some of them for many years now, and we are very grateful for their continued help - which covers the cost of printing and leaves a bit over - which is a drop in the ocean to the money we need to maintain the costly equipment required to keep the ground in the condition it should be - one repair to the outfield mower this year cost over a thousand pounds - this is why we need to raise money through sponsorship and fundraising events.
• COACHING for the youngsters, and practice sessions for seniors, will begin on Sunday February 17 at Southam College, the juniors from 4.30-6pm, and seniors 6-7.30pm, for 8 weeks, as advertised in the monthly Southam Advertiser, and a week or two before in the Leamington Observer and Leamington Spa Courier, who provide the editorial space for our match reports throughout the summer.
After two disappointing seasons both Southam sides finished Second in their respective Division One leagues to gain promotion back to the Premier Division of the Warwickshire league after a season filled with highs and lows, rain and once they got out onto the field of play, some fine cricket, and both sides fully deserved their success. For Reports, photos and stories of all the action go to Profiles, The Sweep, Reports and Pavilion View.
• SOUTHAM CRICKET CLUB is based at Old Road, Southam, ideally situated between Banbury, Coventry, Leamington Spa and Rugby, and approximately 5 miles from the M40, and we play our Saturday League cricket in the Warwickshire League, fielding two sides every week from May to September. The league provides probably the best standard of cricket for club sides in the area and we have enjoyed some fine cricket over the years. Both Southam Saturday sides gained promotion in 2007 to the Premier Division after an exciting season.
• ON SUNDAYS Southam are one of the only teams in the district still to be able to field two sides for friendly games on most dates throughout the summer, and struggle to find teams to play, although we have a core of regular opponents with whom we still enjoy some cracking games, but anyone wishing to give us a fixture contact the fixture secretary.
• JUNIOR CRICKET - We believe at Southam in encouraging youth cricket, and over the last 15 years have helped along the way many players who now are showing their skills in the senior game, and this is probably why we still have a keen crop of young players on Sundays is because of our policy to give the youngsters a chance. Regular coaching from qualified coaches both indoor and out means we can offer a good sporting chance to any budding Freddie Flintoff! Southam run an under 13s team and under 17s in the Rugby league on Tuesdays, and the under 15s play their league matches on Thursdays.
• THE LADIES don't miss out, they have run their own team for 25 years, and for the last 7 or 8 in local league cricket played on Monday nights, and have won the league on 4 occasions with a successful side, but are always looking for new players.
• SOCIAL EVENTS - At Southam, once the games over we like to relax with a pint or two, and encourage supporters to come up to the ground for a drink as well, and try to create a family atmosphere - we run social events throughout the year including race nights, quiz nights, barbecues etc., and keep it a friendly, sociable place to be on a balmy summer evening.
• THE GROUND is the most important part of the club, and Rob Shaw has been head groundsman for a long time now, and most clubs that come to Southam comment on the high standard of the pitches Rob prepares, ably assisted by club secretary Nikki Clewes and ground manager Nick Clewes, and we are indebted for the amount of work they put into the pitch. More success as for 2007 we have been voted best ground and oufield in the entire league and our division, which is indeed a great achievement.
